Dec. 11, 2024 - PROOF of a Sunshine Law violation on March 9, 2023. It's illegal for City Commissioners to discuss matters outside of public meetings for which they will later cast votes.
Florida's Government-in-the-Sunshine Manual explains that Florida Statute 286.011 prohibits them from "discussing some matter which foreseeably will come before the board or commission."
If Mayor Jesse Nelson or any of the Lynn Haven Commissioners pictured below cast a vote on stormwater or infrastructure funding since their fateful trip to Tallahassee, then they have committed a misdemeanor of the second degree.
State Attorney Larry Basford would have to charge and prosecute them if a citizen brought the evidence to his office asking for the law to be enforced.
FUN FACT: Only three days later, Florida Attorney Gen. Ashley Moody celebrated National Sunshine Week by releasing the 2023 Government-in-the-Sunshine Manual.
